Introduction + What is the Trader of the Month
Today, we’re going to dive into the results of our March Trader of the Month contest.
We’ll discover who topped the charts with the best overall performance, and also check out those who, although they didn’t clinch the top spot, still put up impressive numbers.
We’ll also share some practical tips based on our traders’ real-life experiences. So we’ll see what strategies paid off and discuss whether we can replicate this success with our own live trading.
Just a reminder, the Trader of the Month contest is only open to students of the Unger Academy, and it’s a great opportunity to submit your live results and compete for a €2,000 Amazon gift card.
One of the coaches at Unger Academy here, and let’s get started with the first report from Marco.
Marco, who earned €3,539(with a return of 28.49%)
Marco earned €3,539 this March, which translates to a performance of 28.49%, with a drawdown of 11.07%.
These results are certainly impressive.
Checking out the equity line, the first half of the month was pretty rocky, but eventually, the account hit its peak.
All in all, solid performance. The drawdown is a bit steep for just a month but Marco nailed it.
Live Cattle, Gold, and Cocoa. These are the main assets Marco traded to hit these numbers.
Antonio, who earned €9,178 (with a return of 27%)
Moving on to Antonio’s statement, he made €9,178, equaling a 27% return, with a surprisingly low drawdown of just 6.35%.
The equity curve is pretty smooth, steadily climbing from the start to the end of the month with just minor bumps. Indeed, the drawdown sits nicely at 6.35%, which is pretty proportional to the 27% return.
What assets did Antonio trade? Mini S&P 500, Crude Oil, Mini Nasdaq, and Mini Dax.
So kudos to Antonio as well, you’ve really excelled.
Lorenzo, the winner, who earned €16,524 (with a return of 30.49% and a drawdown of 1.79%)
Now, let’s talk about our winner, Lorenzo, who last month earned $16,524, a whopping 30.49% return, with an incredibly low drawdown of just 1.79%.
That’s an outstanding performance. Congratulations, Lorenzo, you’ve earned the Trader of the Month title.
His equity curve was exceptionally steady, climbing non-stop from the beginning to the end of the month.
What assets did Lorenzo’s trade? Copper, Mini SP500, Raw Rice, Feeder Cattle, and Micro Crude Oil.
Lorenzo was also kind enough to answer some questions so we could learn more about his journey.
He’s been with Unger Academy for two and a half years but has only been trading live since February 2024.
He started off with a great performance also thanks, as he said, to the personalized coaching we offer, which guides you step-by-step for eight weeks—and indeed, he managed to go live in just four weeks.
This dedicated coaching initiative, introduced last year, has been a real game-changer and is something you rarely find elsewhere.
With Unger Academy, you get someone to guide you through every step of the way, helping you transition to live trading in no time.
Lorenzo is self-employed, so his job allows him to monitor his trades, although it’s not a necessity for systematic traders like us.
He especially enjoys using our Strategy Checker, a tool that sends push notifications to your smartphone when trades are opened and closed, allowing you to monitor your trading account even when you’re away from your computer.
Lorenzo manages a portfolio of 10 strategies, mainly trend-following—eight from our Million Dollar Database and two he developed himself.
For those unfamiliar, our Million Dollar Database offers students access to over 60 ready-to-use strategies.
From this database, Lorenzo has carefully chosen strategies based on their performance over the last two years, focusing on average trade values and drawdowns to craft a diversified portfolio.
He diversifies through different underlying assets and time frames, using a blend of large and small contracts, particularly Micro futures on the Mini S&P 500, Crude Oil, Gold, and Nasdaq.
He currently maintains a medium risk profile and hasn’t yet needed to use our Titan software, which helps manage a diversified strategy portfolio, though he is considering it as he expands his system count.
He continues to use the Strategy Checker, though.
Here are Lorenzo’s tips for new live traders: start with a demo account, which is crucial for testing new strategies in real-time conditions.
Choose your underlying assets and systems carefully. And we’ve already mentioned Lorenzo’s selection criteria.
Build a portfolio of at least 4 to 6 strategies for some basic diversification, and avoid overly large contracts, like RBOB Gasoline for example, which can result in discouraging drawdowns for beginners.
Thanks again to Lorenzo for his insights and congratulations on a well-deserved contest win.
