I can’t do this, I’m not a programmer!
This is a claim that I often listen to: “I cannot become a systematic trader because I can’t program software!”
The good news is that I can’t either, I’m not a programmer, I have no specific knowledge of computers, yet you see, systems are running here on my back, completely automated and the good news is that all the instructions to let them run, were written by myself, not being a programmer.
Why?
Because you don’t really need specific skills.
We are not programming any software for the Space Shuttle to go to Mars or wherever, no!
We are using languages that are pre-built for trading.
Programming a Trading System: The Real Obstacle
There are still languages like MQL for Metatrader which are complicated for non-programmers.
So if you are not a programmer and you face MQL, you see a number of lines in your code which may drive you crazy, 200 lines to write a simple code!
Obviously, in 200 lines you can forget something if you are not a programmer.
While if you can write the same in five or ten lines, it’s less probable you miss something.
Is it possible?
Programming a Trading System: The Solution
Yes, I use Easy Language from TradeStation or Power Language from Multicharts, which is more or less the same, and these are really easy.
I’m not claiming that today you don’t know anything and tomorrow you’ll know everything, no!
This is impossible, you still need to study, you need to understand, you need to train and to do whatever you need to know, to gain that knowledge that is necessary to build systems, but it is not the real obstacle to becoming a systematic trader.
It is not, because I’ve done it, if I’ve done it, everybody can believe me and it didn’t take me that long.
The Benefit of Having the “One Year Target” Program

You won’t be the next programmer for N.A.S.A., but you will be able to build your trading systems, considering also that you have scripts, pre-built scripts on which you have just to add something.
